Book Review: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Hey everyone! It's Squashed Grape AGAIN :D Just want to say sorry if not everyone posted last week, we're still adjusting to schedule! Hope you guys stick around and hopefully let other people know about this website cuz I put a lot of effort into it.

I also want to tell you guys about an amazing blog called JustABookishTeen. She does amazing reviews and other 'bookish' stuff on there and her work is awesome! She's a member on here as well, her member profile is Violet Perry:)

I'm also working on making a newsletter for you guys, however, I'm only going to make one if loads of people are going to use it. Basically how a newsletter works is that you subscribe with your email and then you get notifications through email when someone posts. So your emails don't get spammed with messages, I'm thinking of maybe just asking you to sign up to be notified of some specific members, if you get what I mean...? Anyway I'll make it if a lot of people are going to use it.

THE CASE IS CLOSED.

Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it.

But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn't so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final-year project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?

Okay, this was an amazing book! I read it all in one day. Well, I normally read books in one day if they're paperback but when I read an eBook, it normally takes me longer so this was really fast for me. I totally recommend this book, the ending was very unexpected and it's not a cliché murder mystery where you can kind of guess the ending, but here literally everyone was a suspect and everyone was somehow related to the mystery. I'm going to try and give you guys an honest review with no spoilers and try not to make it sound too much like an essay. 😅

So it's about a 17 year old girl called Pippa Fitz-Amobi. For her final year project, she decides to research a murder that occurred five years ago: the murder of schoolgirl Andie Bell. Everyone in Little Kilton is sure that Andie's boyfriend, Sal Singh, was responsible for the murder but Pippa isn't so sure. She delves into the case and reveals hidden secrets and lies that the small town of Little Kilton is full of.

Before reading the book, I thought it was going to be a boring normal teen crime novel which I always read and kind of get bored of sometimes, but this-

It was EPIC.

It's one of those books where I wish it was a never-ending series on Netflix that I would binge watch. At first I thought it was overrated - I mean, a murder novel being THIS popular? But it is definitely something I would probably make everyone I know read. (Avocado and Jungli: you guys better read this book it's so good I can't even-)

Pippa is like the best protagonist ever. She's very relatable, she's not popular or anything, actually she has a very awkward personality (probably gets it from her abnormally crazy but supportive family, if you read the book you'll see 😉) I always prefer books that don't have that protagonist that everyone's friends with. What I also really liked about this book is that it wasn't easy for Pippa to get information. Of course, there were threats and murders...and some people just didn't like her for no reason at all and wouldn't tell her what they knew. Pippa is super determined to get her way and at first even ignores the threats.

And then there's Ravi. Don't worry, Pippa and Ravi don't have a romantic relationship or anything, unlike most teen murder books that have a lot of cheesy 'romantic' scenes. Ravi is Sal Singh's brother. At first he's wary that Pippa, like everyone else in the town, will treat him differently because Number 1, he's Indian and Number 2, he's the brother of the alleged murderer Sal Singh. But then after, he opens up more to Pippa as he finally meets someone who thinks that not enough evidence was provided for Sal to be the killer. They have an amazing (I really should start finding more synonyms for amazing - I use that word too much! ¬_¬) relationship, filled with a lot of sarcasm, teasing and looking out for each other.

There is a lot of sensitive topics in this book like rape, drugs etc. but Holly Jackson weaves them into the story really well, though it is probably better for older teens. (I'm not an 'older' teen exactly so this is kind of hypocritical but I guess I can handle this stuff).

The way Holly Jackson set out the book was genius. Lots of production log entries, social media screenshots, recorded interviews and mind maps made me really engage with the story and try and figure out the murder myself. I was totally wrong but still, it was worth trying xD.

I was very wrong about my guess, so that must mean that it's a really good book...? It's full of changes and has a very fast pace, changing the Number one suspect all the time.

This is now being mentally added to my favourite book list which exists in my head. I loooooveeed this book and can't wait to read the second one!

Okay, that's all from me! Hopefully this didn't bore you out too much! If you have any good books for me to review then let me know via email or in the comments. Comment, share with your family and friends, and like if you thought this post was good. See you all next week! Have a good day/night wherever you are and stay safe, byeeee! <3333
